Ricky Harrell has lived in Pelahatchie more than 40 years. And, worked here for many years as accounting and general manager of the Egg Processing Plant, owner of the Bait Shop, and even running a cattle operation. He retired in 1997 as maintenance supervisor from University Medical Center in Jackson.
Harrel was named the new Town zoning administrator at the February 5 Board Meeting, taking the place of Lynn Gunn, who resigned in January. At the meeting Harrell had said that he only wanted $300 a month to cover expenses, because he knew the Town was having money problems.
“I like Pelahatchie,” said Harrell, whose son, Brady, is the public works director. I want it to look neat and clean, so everyone can enjoy our little town.”
Harrell and his wife of 47 years, Gayle, also have another son, Ben, who is a lieutenant at the Reservoir Fire Department. They also have three grandsons, Andrew, a senior and Aiden, a fifth grader at East Rankin; and Lane Shelton, a tenth grader at Morton.
Since his retirement, Harrell has spent his time restoring and showing old street rods and volunteering to help the Town wherever needed. As zoning administrator, he will inspect buildings, houses or property to issue permits to build. He will also give a monthly report to the mayor and aldermen at the Board Meeting.
