The first day of school is just around the corner, and we are hard at work getting ready for the upcoming year! We are anticipating an exciting year as we move our school from GREAT TO BEST and wanted to make you aware of several exciting things happening here at PES.

Did you know that when kids don’t read over the summer they are likely to fall behind when they head back to school? These learning losses are often called the “Summer Slide,” and our school has made it a priority to keep our students’ skills sharp by encouraging them to read all summer long. Over the summer, each student is expected to complete the required summer reading for his/her upcoming grade level to be fully prepared for back-to-school activities. summer reading books were sent home with every student prior to summer break.

In addition to the required summer reading, students were also invited to participate in our Summer Reading Challenge, a free online reading program where they can log their reading minutes. A Reading Celebration was held for each grade where students were given two to three books to kick start their summer reading. Please encourage your child to read and log his or her minutes every day at www.scholastic.com/summer. If our school logs the most minutes of any participating school, we’ll win a visit from a bestselling children’s book author!

Here are a couple of ideas to help you and your child keep the reading momentum going all summer:

Read books that make you laugh.

Try titles like Dr. Seuss (3-5 yrs), Junie B. Jones (6-7 yrs), Diary of a Wimpy Kid (8-10), and Sisters (11-13).

Read together.

Kids love to be read to no matter what age they are! Find a time this summer to read together.

Set a goal and see how many books you can read with your child in one summer.  Read aloud the sports section, a comic book, or your favorite children’s book.

Our library will be open Tuesday, July 10, 17, and 24 from 4-7 p.m. for students to read, log into their Scholastic reading program, complete Achieve3000 articles, and/or use a computer for educational purposes. An adult must accompany students at all times.

Registration for new students will begin July 18.

To register a new kindergarten student, you will need to provide:

  • child’s birth certificate, social security card, and shot record (Form 121)

  • two Proofs of Residency (a lease/mortgage and a utility bill)

All other registrations will require:

  • two Proofs of Residency (a lease/mortgage and a utility bill)

Parents and students are invited to join us for a “Sneak Peek” of the upcoming school year. This will be a time to meet teachers, tour classrooms, drop off school supplies, and learn how to get involved!
